What does the future hold for magazines, newspapers, and books in the middle of its gyrating competition with their electronic counterparts? PAPER GOES ONLINE: DOES IT BUILD A GAP?\


        In this day and age where technology is part of the lives of every individual, the print media to digitalized media transition was not a surprise. Many print magazines are now in the process of instead having it in print media; they want to switch to the online world and digitalized world where a larger market is available and off reach. But, who would have thought that print and online is one way to divide the people? That in some way print and online may define your status in economy and life?


          The Knowledge Gap theory states that knowledge is treated as a commodity wherein this is not reachable by everyone but only the few people who are well off in terms of money or economic status are the ones who has access to it and may somehow be treated as a gain of power, Power against the people who are not that well off or the marginalized people. This theory stresses in a way how access to technology can form a gap between different individuals in the society. Wherein only the people on top, are the ones who know more and gains a lot of information from different sources lead by technology that separates them from the other people who doesn’t have access to technology.

     Some of the reasons stated in the theory that causes the knowledge gap are the communication skills, wherein the educated person has a lot more to offer in terms of vocabulary compared to an uneducated person. Second is the stored information, with the access of technology, individuals are able to know more and gather more information through online sources. Third, Media target markets wherein the higher state of the society are the ones who are aware of what’s happening compared to the lower state of the society. These are only some of the reasons but in the other studies made, there are also ways of reducing the gap according to George Donohue who proposed some ways to reduce this said gap.

       Basically, the knowledge gap theory is exposing some facts on how the people in the higher state of the society have more access to information through different mediums that only they can afford. One of these is their access to the web or online sources that gives them a whole new world to explore in, and a vast knowledge for them to nourish. This way it forms a gap between the marginalized people when it comes to their knowledge base. This theory is in line to the transition of print media to digitalized or online media. An example of print media are  magazines that are now in the process of switching to online magazines instead, Because the online market is huge nowadays, because of it being accessible in just one click and be reached by tons of people around the world who has the capacity to go search the web or online.

One famous print magazine is the “Newsweek Magazine” that is now considering their transition to the Digital Media instead. "The transition will happen. I'm not saying it will happen totally but the transition to online from hard print will happen", says Barry Diller. Although the team assigned to research and study the process of this said transition from print to digital found out some issues. The Newsweek Magazine team was thinking of full digital media only. It only means that they will release articles and their issues online, which made everybody, think twice. They found out that most of their readers preferred print as their medium. Although they haven’t made final decisions yet, the transition online will happen. It may not be fully digitalized version of “Newsweek Magazine” but, sooner or later it will not only be present in print but also introduced to the digital scene.

         The idea of transition from print to online or digitalized media is really present in the minds of the publishers. Especially if you want a larger and broader market for your company. But, there are advantages and disadvantages in this transition. First advantage is that, you have a new market; bigger, and a mix of different readers. Second, you just have to post it online and everyone can access the content. Well, anyone who has the capacity to go online though. The dissemination of the magazine will be easier. Third, the layout of magazine will be more upscale than print. Who wouldn’t want to read something that looks trendy and modern? There are a lot of advantages yet to be mentioned. But basically, the magazine will just be one click away!

        On the other hand, advantages come with disadvantages as well. Studies show that people tend to have shorter attention span if they get used to reading online because of its access to many connected information to what you are reading. Second, not all can really access the web, only the people who have the capacity can read it. Having that said, the knowledge gap theory comes in here. Because, if not all can access the web, it forms gap between people who can and cannot. The lack of information or know-how of people compared to the people who can sit and access the web every day. Not only does it form a gap, but it also gives more power to the higher society.

     The transition from print to online is yet to happen, having its advantages and  disadvantages. The people just need to accept the fact that this world is controlled  by technology.  Sooner or later, everything  will become  digitalized. All we can do now for the marginalized people or  the people who really do not  have the means to access the web and get informed is to give them the  same power and probably give them  the chance to experience what the higher state of society  enjoys in the web. Online magazines will surely be a hit;  publishers just have to consider the people who aren’t well off.
